The 5 Talk Moves

REPEAT: ask 'can you repeat that?
ADD ON: add to someone's idea, or can someone else add to an idea.
REVOICE:  stated what the person had said but reword it in more understandable terminology.
AGREE OR DISAGREE: ask others if they agree or disagree.
WAIT TIME: allowing time for problems to be solved on their own, during this time you can offer feedback on some students work.

Think boards: allow students to solve their problems in a variety of different ways ( page divided into 4 with the problem in the middle.  Each section is labeled Draw it, alternative strategy, equation, equipment).

At the top of each column of the progressions it states "In contexts that require them to solve problems or model situations, students will be able to:'

Think about an appropriate context for the students in your class - what will relate to them.
Right now -  Marae trip, sports/large balls, playground, birthday parties.

Think, Pair, Share. Use traffic lights or thumbs up to help judge how the students are going.
"Red's come and work with me, yellows and greens work together".

After 'Share' they need to have time to go away and practise that/those strategies. There needs to be an example left up or in a modelling book so that they have somewhere to go back to if stuck.

Reflection at the end. 'Ticket out the door' - students must solve a similar problem and post it on the board before they can leave for the day.  They could also answer a simple question like 'What did you learn today?'.

Thinking group rules - Speaker, listener, recorder.
