Workshop 2 Maaori achievement, engagement & education - Wharenui
De-mystifying the idea of culturally responsive pedagogy for the purpose of increasing engagement - a personal opinion
Nā Toti West
What is culture?
- Maaori learning as Maaori what does "as Maaori" mean?
- Maaori identity is not a box, it's a spectrum
- Maaori identity is not so simple ...it can be a choice, it can be a sense of belonging
What is responsive?
- responding to the needs of the person that walks through your door... eg. not using the same 10-year-old lesson plans - that isn't responsive to what is in front of you right now.
- Not every Maaori student has the same "cultural" needs...
So how do you be culturally responsive?
- There is no " one strategy fits all"
- Focussing on strategies to be culturally responsive is often hard work, confusing, and deflating when you try your best and are told
Culturally Responsive Pedagogy
- know the student - who are they? what makes them?
- teaching with empathy - understanding how your interactions will affect the student, especially their perception of their own self-worth
- The student needs to understand that he or she and their identity is valued and important - start with relationships.
- involve the whaanau
- foster an empowering sense of self-worth, belonging and identity
Culturally Responsive Pedagogy - the magic answer for engagement
- you are not going to be able to connect with every student, so have strategies ready to deal with this and promote productive relationships nonetheless
- the same actions, in the same contexts, with similar personalities, will likely give you similar results
- Kura Maaori the answer for Maaori students
Maaori engagement - much bigger than one person
- become the catalyst for change in your sphere of influence
- engage in professional conversations
- meaning well vs doing well
- just because something has a Maaori name, it doesn't make it Maaori
- always challenge yourself to be better
